I'm setting up leadcore and wondered what knot to use when tying the leader and backer to the leadcore, any suggestions?

I use a Blood knot. Someone might have a link to knots that will show what a blood knot is unless you already know.

OK,,,I am spearheading a movement to rename the blood knot to the #$@%&* knot. This thing is tough to tie with leadcore. All those years of Boy scouts and I didn't learn a thing.

Try this from the Great Lakes Angler website . glangler.com from the ask a pro forum on March 28 tittle " leadcore knots " . I tried it and it is unbelievable how simple and strong it is . Sam I Am Member since Feb-5-0349 posts, Rate this user        Mar-23-03, 06:47 PM (GMT)         8. "RE: Leadcore Knots"In response to message #0         Slide the dacron sleeve back on the leadcore approx 4" then break or cut-off the exposed leadcore, Now tie a very loose overhand knot a couple inchs back on the leadcore (be careful not to close up the knot) now slide the line your attaching to the leadcore into the dacron sleeve it will take a little getting use to but be patient once the two are touching inside the sleeve start pushing the knot forward so that the backing line inside the sleeve is what your tying into a knot. I used this all last season and never had a problem. there's also a diagram of this on I believe it's the fish-ludington site, I may be wrong on that but I will check and update this message. Gotta Go,Gotta Fish,Gotta go fish Chris: First, I would recommend superline backing, not mono as you can fit more on and you don't have to worry about it weakening. The best knot is a double uni, in my opinion. For the leader, try a "Willis knot" that Willis Kerridge has been teaching. Hard to explain, but basically, you pull a few inches of lead from the dacron sheath and tie the sheath into a loose overhand knot. Run your mono through the knot, slide the knot to withing a half inch or so of the end of the sheath and pull tight. It's small, easy, fast and really, really strong. We'll have a picture of it in the June/July issue. Dave Mull Editor Great Lakes Angler Magazine KnifesEdge

One thing to make that knot work better knifes edge is to make sure you have a clean cut on your mono, meaning no burrs. Finger nail clippers work real good for cutting the mono so there are no burrs. No Burrs on the mono will let the mono slide inside the dacron braid very easy.

You got that right Mike .
First time I had a heck of a time getting line to feed in , thinking , this is never going to work ( the mono slidding inside the braided line , which is actually like a tube ) . Then I cut line with clippers like you said and bingo , slid right in . Another trick is after the mono is started inside the braid, push the braided like an accordian effect then actually pull the braided over the mono . These sites are neat when you get all this info and help . Now I have to learn how to get more fish in the cooler aboard the KnifesEdge . KnifesEdge

Just unloaded, retied and reloaded all 5 reels in a couple hours. not bad compared to trying get a good knot with the lead still in the sleave. That knot is very simple and I can't believe how well it holds.
Thanks again Greg

cutting the line is a good tip. Also, if you lightly tap the very end of the lead core line just before inserting the mono it will make it easier.

Using clippers is a good tip. Use 50-100' of 14-20lb. mono or flourocarbon for the leader and attach with the Willis knott. Use Fireline or other
Spectra (30lb) for the backing and attach with the double uni.. Also, Some guys tie a short section of mono between the lead core and the fire line because a
Wlleye board will stay on mono better than the fireline..
